Small Hydro Project

A Small Hydro Project (SHP) refers to a hydroelectric power generation system that harnesses the energy of flowing water from rivers, canals, or streams to produce electricity. These projects are typically classified based on their capacity, usually ranging between 1 MW to 25 MW in India and up to 50 MW in some international classifications.

 Environmentally Friendly

  • Minimal ecological impact compared to large-scale hydro projects.
  • No significant displacement of communities or wildlife.

Run-of-River Design

  • Often follows a "run-of-river" model, meaning it utilizes the natural flow of water without requiring large dams or reservoirs.
  • Ensures continuous energy generation without excessive water storage.

Scalability & Flexibility

  • Can be developed in remote areas, providing power to local grids and isolated communities.
  • Modular designs allow for easier expansion.

Low Operational Costs:

  • Once installed, maintenance costs are relatively low.
  • Long lifespan with sustainable energy output.

Types of Small Hydro Projects

Small hydro projects are classified into three types based on capacity: Micro Hydro (up to 100 kW), suitable for off-grid homes and villages; Mini Hydro (100 kW - 1 MW), used for small industries and local communities; and Small Hydro (1 MW - 25 MW), which connects to regional or national grids for larger power needs.

(Up to 100 kW)

Micro Hydro

Suitable for individual homes, small businesses, or villages.

(100 kW - 1 MW)

Mini Hydro

Used for small industries or community-level electrification.

(1 MW - 25 MW)

Small Hydro

Grid-connected power plants supplying regional and national electricity grids.
